Sad news out of Guatemala this week: chef and culinary
ambassador Humberto Dominguez has passed away. He was 54. Dominguez was the
chef and owner of the renowned Guatemala City Kakao, a restaurant that
specializes in traditional Guatemalan food.

According to Latino
Daily News
, Dominguez was found fatally shot on Tuesday, apparently by the
side of a road and blindfolded. A Kakao representative told the press Dominguez
did have a small disruption to his normal schedule that night (leaving the
restaurant earlier than usual) but El
Periodico
reports that Dominguez had not shared if was being threatened or
was facing any problems.

The death is a blow to the small community Dominguez
represented so well. Chefs in Guatemala are now wearing black ribbons on their
chef whites in memory of Dominguez and the work he did to elevate and represent
their cuisine and their country.
