Aguardiente Sour is a traditional Colombian cocktail made with orange juice, sugar, egg whites, lime juice, and aguardiente. If you’re not familiar with aguardiente, which translates in English as fire water, let me introduce you. It’s a strong alcoholic drink made from anise and sugar cane.

The most popular way to drink aguardiente in Colombia is in shots, but we have some traditional Colombian drinks made with it too. A couple of them include Canelazo, a hot drink made with agua de panela, cinnamon, and aguardiente; and Hervido, a traditional hot drink from the Nariño department, made by boiling fresh fruit juice, such as pineapple (piña), passion fruit (maracuyá), or blackberry (mora) with sugar, and then mixing it with aguardiente; and of course, there is this Aguardiente Sour.

Nowadays, you can find Aguardiente Sour in bars and restaurants across Colombia, but this drink is also very simple to make at home and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients or special equipment. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker don’t worry, just use a blender instead.

The orange juice combined with the tangy lime juice and aguardiente makes this Aguardiente Sour an incredibly light and refreshing drink. Enjoy!
