If you live in a country that gets its fair share of winter, or that simply gets cooler during the holiday season, then you may want to cozy up to one of these adult-only sippers. Boozy, hot drinks to enjoy fire-side, in the company of good friends or handsome strangers- you choose. But one thing remains certain, these are fabulous party starters that help put the merry into any gathering.
Most Colombians swear by the restorative powers of a good, hot cup of candil; if you have a cold or feel one coming on, this is the drink of choice. Perfect for hosting a novena, in lieu of a hot toddy or whenever the mood strikes and the thermometer dips. Maybe Santa would like a cup too!
The Portuguese word for hot is quente, so you can imagine, quentão means muy caliente. Some quentão recipes are wine based, but we opted for this more "steeped tea" like version with warming cinnamon stick, ginger (also a powerful anti-inflammatory), cloves, star anise, and sugar. Of course the star of this show is Brazil's spirit of choice, cachaça. Après ski, in a rambling chalet, we imagine a mug of this hot libation, could soothe weary bones and tired bodies.
This is a wonderfully warm, spiced and Latin inflected take on German Glühvein or Scandinavian Glogg. To give it more Latin sabor, we've swapped out some of the hard spirits (like Scandinavian vodka) for more Latin/Caribbean ones including aged rum and Spanish Brandy. The net result is a feast for the senses- it smells as delicious as it tastes.
