Summer is my season: I love the produce, the decor, the heat. And I love all the extra fun summer happenings, from happy hours to cookouts to farmers market to beach brunches. Though it's hard to keep up with all that's new, check out a few of my favorite things for the month of June! And tell me, what are you into this month?
Despite an aversion to potatoes in almost every form, I LOVE Pomme Frites. The eatery serves only one thing: French fries, dressed up one (or two) of their more than 30 sauces. Sadly, the hole in the wall closed last year after a tragic gas leak and fire but fortunately reopened (with limited hours and staff) in a new spot in New York City’s Greenwich Village. I’ll take a small with sweet mango chutney mayo… or Mexican ketchup… I’ll take two.
I live in an apartment and a lot of personalization (except painting) is prohibited by my lease. Enter this self-adhesive and removable wallpaper. You can use it as a kitchen backsplash or as a liner for shelves, to brighten up an otherwise cookie cutter piece of furniture or an apartment you don't own.
I’m from Miami, where Cuban food is legit and easy to find. Not the case in my current 'hood of Hoboken, New Jersey. Except for La Isla. Their croqueta sandwich rivals that of my hometown favorite Cuban bakery (it’s salty and cheesy and crunchy and smooth and perfect) and they serve better cafés con leche. It’s like taking a trip home, without the cost of airfare.
I’m so into this graphic tea towel from Leif Shop. The summer motif is subtle, the colors keep the towel chic and elegant, and the pattern is fun. It’s a piece of the tropics right in my kitchen.
One of my favorite summer fruits are cherries. I buy a few pounds every week and use them in everything. But they have those pesky pits. Enter my handy dandy cherry pitter. Just drop in the cherry and pits are gone! This is one of the few single task tools I have in my kitchen and I love it. Cherrie tarts, cherry jams, cherry cocktails, cherry everything.
I know, they’re pretty basic but I love micheladas. I prefer my drinks spicy and favor beer over spirits, so this drink is perfect for me. And having taste tested quite a few in my day, no one makes them better than Tacombi. They have just the right amount of heat, enough to leave your lips tingling, but are super refreshing, perf for summer happy hours. Get a fish taco too while you’re there, another one of my faves. Can’t make it to Tacombi? Here’s how to whip one up at home.
